Proofreading and Editing Services
Proofreading involves checking documents for typographical errors, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, numbers, hyphen use, and consistency. I also ensure that when there are tables and figures, the numbers are correct.
Basic Copyediting goes a step further. In addition to proofreading, I correct errors in formatting to make sure that titles, heads, and subheads are consistent. I also check for commonly misused words such as compliment and complement or affect and effect.
Substantive Editing is also known as heavy copyediting because this requires heavy-duty style changes in addition to what is called for in proofreading and basic copyediting. I look for redundancies, wordiness, vagueness, weakness, and lack of focus. Fixing this may include some rewriting and rearranging of sentences to improve clarity and readability.
Math Copyediting fixes the spacing and other formatting in equations. I make sure the variables are in italics and the two-line equations are displayed correctly.

My rates follow the guidelines of the Editorial Freelancers Association.

$30 per hour
Basic Copyediting
5-10 manuscript pages per hour
$30 per hour
Substantive Copyediting
2-5 manuscript pages per hour
$40 per hour
Math Copyediting
